My first memory of drawing/painting was when I won a competition in junior school aged 10.
I started drawing again when I was about 24.

I went to teacher training college in Manchester to become an art teacher in 1970.
I preferred drawing but college opened my eyes to many of the variants of laying images onto paper, board and card.
The 60's and 70's were a time of change.

I was encouraged to experiment and worked on huge boards in acrylic depicting the human form. Blowing paint onto canvas, using my own stencils and adding media to make a relief, were just a few of the interesting approaches to art. Nothing was barred.

However, I also copied Vermeer's paintings to discover how he laid paint down.
On completing college in 1973, my first commission was in 1980 for about 8 paintings for a restaurant in Manchester called The Romans, with that theme.

I began to work to commission painting flowers, landscapes but mostly portraits.

Then a change occurred when a friend gave me some gold leaf. Thinking what to do with it I discovered Illumination.
From there I also became a calligrapher and developed an interest in medieval manuscript decoration and art.
I taught calligraphy to mature students and also at the John Rylands Library Manchester for a short time.
I wrote a series of lessons meant for publication.
Then I developed an interest in font creating and spent many happy hours on my laptop with font creator.
So from 1980 until 2019 I didn't paint, apart from on the walls and floors at home.

Then for my 72nd birthday I received a present from my youngest daughter Jo to spend time in an artists studio. The night before I threw some paint roughly onto a canvas and the rest is history.
My 40 year old paints, many still soft, oil paints have been resurrected. and added to.
New brushes have been purchased.
A studio is now in the conservatory containing my big old easel from my college days and I am happily developing my skills in previously unexplored landscapes.

I have collated all my art here new and old as requested by my family, so please enjoy and contact me direct for commissions and purchases.

Happy browsing
